The Professional Plans track inventory in detail for each shipment, providing more accurate landed costs and COGS. The Essentials Plan is a simpler system that assumes uniform costs, which may not reflect the real cost of your shipments, but easier to use.

Imagine you sell water bottles on Amazon and you purchase 1,000 bottles at $2 each. Here is a simple breakdown:

Detailed Inventory Balances by Warehouse

You only know you have 1,000 water bottles total. There’s no tracking of where they’re stored.

You can see that 500 bottles are in the FBA warehouse in the US from the first shipment, and the other 500 bottles are in another location from the second shipment.

Landed Cost Calculation

Scenario: You ship the 1,000 bottles in two batches:

  1. First shipment: 500 bottles to the US, and you pay $200 for freight.
  2. Second shipment: 500 bottles to the US, and you pay $300 for freight.

The system adds up all costs ($200 + $300 freight = $500) and spreads it evenly across all 1,000 bottles.


Each bottle shows a landed cost of $2.50 ($2 purchase price + $0.50 freight).

The system creates two separate batches:


  1. First batch: 500 bottles with a landed cost of $2.40 each ($2 purchase price + $0.40 freight per bottle).
  2. Second batch: 500 bottles with a landed cost of $2.60 each ($2 purchase price + $0.60 freight per bottle).

This provides precise landed costs for each shipment

Simple COGS FIFO for Essentials
When you sell 100 bottles, it assumes they’re all from the same single batch at a uniform cost of $2.50.
When you sell 100 bottles, it uses the FIFO method and deducts from the first batch (costing $2.40 each). If you sell more later, it deducts from the second batch at $2.60 each.
